“Shadowlands Selections” is a monthly column of recommendations from the Leadership Council of the Society for Women of Letters (Melissa Cain Travis, Julie Miller, Lanie Anderson, Rebekah Valerius, and Megan Rials).

This column is reserved for paid subscribers of Shadowlands Dispatch and/or members of The Society for Women of Letters. If you’d like to receive “Shadowland Selections” every month and support our work, click below to become a paid subscriber today!

In April, these selections are renewing our minds, captivating our imaginations, and challenging our thinking. We hope you enjoy!

  1. Word Made Fresh: An Invitation to Poetry for the Church by Abram Van Engen - Published in June 2024, Word Made Fresh won Christianity Today’s Best Book Award in Culture, Poetry, and the Arts. We’re excited that Van Engen will join us for May’s Bluestocking Salon on Tuesday, May 13, at 7:00pm CDT to discuss it!

Through the centuries, the Church has maintained a rich tradition of poetry; in his book, Van Engen explores why Christians should read poetry and what we can learn from it, using several poems throughout the book as examples. If you’d like to join our discussion with Van Engen next month but aren’t a member of The Society for Women of Letters, your first salon is always free! Just email us at societyforwomenofletters@gmail.com, and we will send the Zoom link you need to attend May’s salon.
